Agricultural Science
and Technology Education
Agricultural Science and Technology Education is the name for secondary
agriculture programs in Texas. The “science and technology”
emphasis evolved from curriculum and program revisions that began in the
late 1980s and continue today. Curriculum revision since 2000 includes
systematic updating of agricultural science and technology curriculum
materials and reinforcing English, math, science, social studies, communication,
and technology applications.
Texas’s curriculum approach includes the following systems: Introduction
to Agricultural Science; Leadership and Communications;
Agricultural Mechanics; Animal
and Plant Sciences; Food Sciences; Horticultural
Sciences; Agribusiness Management; Natural
Resource Sciences; and Work-based/Agricultural
Industry. The agricultural science and technology curriculum includes
47 approved courses based on the Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), described in the Catalog
of Career and Technology Courses, and administered by the Texas
Education Agency.
Customized curriculum refers to IMS personnel
cooperating with agricultural education leaders from states that have
specific needs for student topics (modules of instruction, lesson plans,
etc.) to fulfill respective state standards. Agricultural Educators from
North Carolina selected and adopted modules to meet the needs of agriculture
students and teachers. Refer to customized curriculum
for a detailed description.
